Aerating

Aerating allows air to circulate to the roots promoting stronger and deeper root development and also improves the soil’s water retention capacity.

Perform the Screwdriver Test to find out if your lawn needs aeration.   Poke the lawn with a screwdriver - if it sinks easily, you don't need to aerate.  If it's quite difficult, (i.e., the soil under your lawn has become compacted), you likely need aeration.  If weeds are a concern, aerate in the fall to avoid stimulating weed seeds.  Mechanical aerators can be rented locally (see Resources).

Always follow aeration with overseeding.  Choose a good quality and regionally appropriate lawn seed mix (ask staff at your local garden centre for recommendations).
