Alternatives
In our West Coast climate, turfgrass can be a very hard to maintain plant – using up time, money, and chemicals in the quest for the perfect “green” lawn. Many gardeners are increasingly getting interested in lawn alternatives – a lower maintenance option that’s also good for the environment.
Alternative GroundCovers - Ask your local garden centres about attractive, minimum maintenance ground covers like wooly thyme.
A Smaller Lawn - You may consider gradually replacing parts of your lawn with a lovely flower bed or shrub border. Consider a little wildlife garden that will be appreciated by birds and butterflies in our increasingly urbanized cities.
Hardscaping - In high traffic areas where the soil tends to be compacted, consider replacing grass with paving stones or gravel paths.
